Crane Operator Training & Certification
Associated Training Services (ATS) offers a Mobile Crane Operation Program designed for the individual who wants to become a crane operator. Crane operators are some of the
highest paid operators in the equipment operation occupation. Certified crane operators are also in high demand throughout the country. Many state laws now require crane
operators to be certified. The ATS crane operator training and certification teaches people how operate both fixed cab and swing cab mobile hydraulic cranes.
Graduates of this program are prepared for and tested on the written and practical exams for certification through the National Commission for the Certification of Crane
Operators (NCCCO). The NCCCO crane operator certification is one of the most widely recognized crane operator certifications in the crane operator industry.
ATS is approved by the NCCCO as a test site for both the NCCCO written and NCCCO practical exams for fixed and swing cab crane operators.
Specialized Crane Operator Training & Certification
ATS also offer specialized crane operator training and certification for employers. This training can take place at an ATS training location or at the employer’s location.
ATS has crane operation instructors who travel to remote locations for crane training, testing, and certification. These specialized crane training programs can be customized to
meet the employer’s time and cost requirements.
National Commission For The Certification of Crane Operator (NCCCO)
NCCCO was formed in January 1995 as a non-profit organization to develop effective performance standards for safe crane operation to assist all segments of general industry and
construction. By providing a thorough, independent assessment of operator knowledge and skills, NCCCO aims to enhance lifting equipment safety, reduce workplace risk, improve
performance records, stimulate training, and give due recognition to the professional skill of crane operation. The establishment of NCCCO was the culmination of almost 10
years continuous work by representatives of all industries that use cranes. In essence, the NCCCO program was developed by industry for industry, and continues to be supported
by it.
Here are some of the course modules:
LEVEL 1:
ORIENTATION TO THE TRADE -
Provides an overview of the entire course and highlights the duties and responsibilities of a mobile crane operator. Discusses career opportunities and operator requirements.
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF CRANES -
Offers trainees an introduction to mobile crane equipment with an in-depth discussion of terminology. Explains the basic scientific principles associated with mobile crane operation.
RIGGING PRACTICE -
Offers a basic understanding of the fundamentals of rigging. Discusses a variety of rigging gear, components, configurations and their applications within the mobile crane industry.
CRANE SAFETY -
Introduces various safety aspects of mobile crane operation, including equipment inspection, site hazard inspection, site hazard identification, and required personal protection equipment. Discusses how to work with site plans and specifications.
OPERATING A CRANE -
Describes the basic functions and standard procedures of operating a crane. Provides the trainee with the opportunity to become familiar with the actual operation of a crane and the functions of its controls.
COMMUNICATION
Covers the fundamentals of the communication process; addressing abstractions, fear and lack of experience; and environmental factors. Covers verbal and nonverbal methods of communications.
Take an in-depth look at the ASME B30.5 hand signals, including the appropriate operator action when the signal is given and the expected machine movement.
MACHINE POWER FLOW
Discuss the various power systems that enable different cranes to perform their work. Discusses diesel and gasoline/propane engines and electrical/motor-generator, as well as
mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic power systems.
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE
Covers preventive maintenance and compliance inspections on a crane. Presents the safety considerations, procedures, and equipment/material required for these inspections.
WIRE ROPE
Covers the components of wire rope and inspection requirements and procedures of wire rope, load blocks, and sheaves. Explains proper installation of wire rope, maintenance
guidelines, and end terminations and preparations.
COMPUTER AIDS/OPERATOR AIDS
Provides information on load moment indicators, anti-two-block devices, load indicators, and other operator aids that are installed in cranes. Includes an in-depth look at the input
devices associated with these operator aids and the information they provide.
LOAD DYNAMICS
Covers leverage and stability, operational quadrants, submerged lifts, non-centered lifts, and other factors that affect stability.
ON-SITE EQUIPMENT MOVEMENT
Covers site hazards and restrictions that could hinder on-site crane movement, safety considerations involved in crane movement over unlevel ground, pick-and-carry operations;
and power line contact. Addresses flotation capacity.
